Those were the days

On Saturday I was mistaken for Ricky Wilson from the Kaiser Chiefs by a drunken girl in The Good Mixer in Camden. The last time I was mistaken for someone famous in The Mixer was about 12 years ago when a few tourists thought I was Brett Anderson from Suede, which got me thinking about those times.

This was at the height of Britpop and I was in the the thick of it. The Good Mixer was supposed to be the pub where it all started, with all the main players drinking in there and being one big happy family. I only ever seemed to see either Graham Coxon from Blur or various members of Menswear, I think musicians must drink in the day time when the rest of us are at work. But it was still exciting at the time for someone like me coming from a small town and seeing those bands on Top of the Pops and then drinking in the same pubs.

I was thin and bony(we were the original drunkorexics)back then with dyed black hair wearing lots of black. Suede were big business at the time and it was quite flattering being mistaken for Brett.

Now that I'm being mistaken for larger people I have vowed to actually start using my stepper machine I was bought for Christmas (I requested it, it wasn't a hint) I am starting an intense programme to stop getting anymore comparisons to stocky singers.

I'm wearing all black today as a tribute to those days, I'm even wearing pointed boots on a Tuesday- how outrageous is that?

Well outrageous. Were pointy shoes a staple of that time?

Is it just my imagination or does the mixer always have a slightly strange smell in it?

I know!

I think most people used to wear old skool trainers like Gola etc at the time but a few of us used to defy the norm and wear poity shoes.

Yes, you're right, it really smells of sick in there, it probably always has done but the smoke used to disguise it before the smoking ban.

Do you frequent it often?

I've been there a few times with some friends that like it a lot. If it is the place I think it is, its strange because there's like two sides of the pub and the connection between them is the toilets. Maybe its not actually that strange, but I always notice it when I'm there.

I wish I was out and about 12 years ago. Those seem like heady times. What happened to Menswear?

It's usually one of my stop offs on a night out in Camden, it's a shithole really but it's hard to keep away!

Various members of Menswear are still knocking around, Simon is Bloc Party's manager, the drummer is in another band possibly Tokyo Police Club?, one of them is a showbiz reporter for XFM. Not sure what the singer is doing but have seen him around, time has not been kind to him though.I always felt quite sorry for them, as they were definately one of the victims of the Britpop backlash.

They were good times back then but I don't think it's that much different now.

Tokyo Police Club, I like that band a lot.

I remember a lot of bands from that time, but never knew about menswear till I was older, until I saw this really good programme filmed around the time that had loads of performances from BP bands. Like Sleeper, remember them...

Oh shit there's a horse in the hospital!
