I love short stories. I recently watched a film called Paris J'taime which is all about the city of Paris (nah you don't say) and the meaning and effects of love.
It was a bit of a soppy one in places and had that French flavour (which is tasty in doses, but a little but overpowering and sour in extremes - like when Arsenal was full of French players and playing amazing ((or "getting down the wing and pulling the ball back" along football)) ... but was a great example of the short story craft.
Short stories are at their best when they disorientate the reader. As a reader you are welcomed into this heightened moment in time - sad, happy, soulful, bleak or mystical - which is exquisite in it's precise nature.
I recommend people read anything by Raymond Craver if they want to see the short story in it's great form. Amazing, simple, direct and perfect.

I'm really liking Dot Rotten at the moment. He has a controlled and skippy'ish flow which packs a lot of venom.

I want to see Paris J'taime. I was a bit unsure about it when I came out, but you've sold it to me.
Raymond Carver does write some good short stories. I like how his stories are fictional but really grounded in reality. Its like whats seen as mundane is often more interesting that the hobbits et al.
